Top Performers Spotlight Featuring Mark Harmon, Business Development Manager Neuronetics
Being an account manager is like having your own business. The more you put in, the more you get out. Our potential is limitless, and I have experienced first-hand earning 4 back-to-back Presidents' Circle, Region Manager of the Year, and have taught thousands of salespeople just like you. So let's get you thinking like a business owner.
In this interview series called “Top Performers Spotlight,” I talk with sales representatives who have excelled in their careers and are recognized as the top performers in the medical industry. They share their expert insights with sales professionals who want to succeed. As a part of this series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Harmon.
1. Tell us about your career journey and how you transitioned into the industry you work in now?
At the time I transitioned into Medical device sales, I was selling financial equipment to banks. I had been trying to break into the medical field, but it wasn’t as easy as I had hoped. After about a year of trying to land a good position, I hit my network hard and reconnected with an old friend who was in the industry.
I was looking for tips on the best way to break in. As it turned out a few months later, the company he worked for was hiring. He was running the Western Region at Sciton Lasers at that time. I was hired, and my family and I relocated from San Antonio to Dallas. We’ve been in the Dallas area now for 8 years.
This past year I made another transition, this time it was into the Mental Health side of Medical Devices. There is a growing Mental health crisis in the world, and it’s nice to be a part of a company (Neuronetics) that is leading the field to help combat depression without medication.
2. What do you love about the industry you work in?
I love the fact that I am directly involved in changing the tide of the widespread mental health crisis. I love that I am representing cutting-edge technology in that field. I have been fortunate to have sold lasers, and now most recently Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). It’s truly forefront technology that changes the lives of people who suffer daily from depression. It’s amazing to see the technology we have today, and where it can go in the future.
3. Tell me about the three most influential people in your life and how they impacted you?
There are too many to list! My parents and my wife have had the biggest impact in my life overall. Professionally speaking, I give credit to the family at Sciton who first gave me a chance in Medical: Jim Hobart, “The Godfather of Lasers” is Sciton’s founder along with Dan Negus.
David Percival is who hired me at Sciton. He’s now VP of International Sales. I worked alongside David and Aaron Burton early on. Aaron, who’s territory I took over and is now the CEO. They both have great business minds and great leadership abilities that impacted me as I grew.
4. What has led to your success?
I have been blessed to have worked with really great people and amazing technologies. Having an honest and ethical approach to this business has brought me a long way. I always try to be humble and help others achieve their goals.
5. What’s your biggest failure—and what did you learn from that experience?
Failures are a good thing if you are learning from your mistakes. I wish I would have started in Med Device earlier in my career and been more persistent, but things have worked out well. I had a few jobs early in my career that wasn’t the best fit, but I learned from each one. Even though I would have liked to be in Medical earlier, I believe those early jobs added to my wheelhouse and helped me be successful in Medical.
6. What advice would you give someone who wants to earn Presidents Circle?
It takes more than hard work, so you need to take it a step further and do the little things others won’t. Be willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve those goals.
It sounds cliché, but writing down goals and visualizing your future successes can play a big role in being able to achieve them.
7. What is your favorite leadership development book?
There are a lot of great ones, but the classic, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill is probably my first choice. It was one of the first leadership self-improvement books that really had an impact on me and affected how I live my business life.
8. What is your next big goal and how are you going to reward yourself when you achieve your goal?
Every year I am shooting to hit Presidents Club. My goal is to be happy and enjoy what I am doing. If you’re not having fun, you’re at the wrong job.
The reward: My wife and I have some house upgrades we’d like to complete this year.
